STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF ORAL ROBERTS

Heaven has welcomed home one of the greatest evangelists in the history of the Christian faith.  It was my privilege to know Oral Roberts personally.  I first met him when I was in high school.  He profoundly impacted my life as a young preacher.  No other single person in the twentieth century drew great crowds to hear him preach the Gospel, authored dozens of books, pioneered television evangelism, founded a university, and founded graduate schools of law, nursing, medicine, and theology and missions.  As I wrote just a couple of months ago, “Oral Roberts was a towering figure of the twentieth century.  We have much to learn from his life and legacy.  In a few years we will begin to understand just how much we owe him.”  On my first visit to his home a copy of Oswald Chambers’ classic devotional, My Utmost for His Highest, was on the coffee table.  That describes his life and peerless evangelistic ministry.  Oral Roberts was his utmost for His highest.
